The Campaign

Polar Winds was an airborne campaign that investigated boundary layer atmospheric circulations over the Arctic primarily using NASA’s Doppler Aerosol WiNd (DAWN) lidar. NASA’s UC-12B equipped with DAWN was used during the first deployment, Polar Winds I, from October to November 2014. For the second deployment, Polar Winds II, the DC-8 was used with a payload of DAWN, TWiLITE, and dropsondes during May 2015. The instruments listed were utilized to collect wind measurements over Greenland and the Denmark Strait. Polar Winds was funded by NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD).
